Let’s All Drink More Beer!
Well, don’t drink too much. I just want you to know something really exciting that Corona became the first major global beer brand to pilot biodegradable 6-pack rings in conjunction with Parley, a collaboration of thought leaders attempting to thwart the destruction of the ocean. Corona has partnered with Parley AIR to create the first ever plastic-free rings that will biodegrade in our oceans.
The plastic-free rings are made from plant-based material that are completely biodegradable. The rings will break-down after disposal. No micro-plastics from these 6-pack rings! It is currently in the testing phase.
This is one small step for the ocean, and one giant leap for the planet.
Why Do You Care?
You care because 40% of all plastic worldwide goes into packaging. Take that in. Everything you eat is wrapped in plastic. That packaging ends up in the ocean and sweet ocean animals end up ensnared in the rings.
When I was a kid I used to cut each of the rings apart so maybe I could save an animal from getting caught in them.
I once considered going zero-waste as a personal movement and vendetta against plastic, but then I was worried I would starve to death. A hunger strike is not protest of choice. I would miss tacos. This is what we need to be thinking about – how to find alternative solutions to using plastics.
“It’s not enough to recycle plastic. We need to avoid and replace it wherever possible. And we need to develop and test viable, scalable alternatives to succeed.”

What Can You Do?
As the mother of four children, including a set of triplets, it is important to me that my family all honor the earth, giving back and preserving the health of our oceans by making small changes in everyday life. Since beginning Ocean Junkies, my entire family has a new conscious awareness of using plastic straws and utensils in restaurants and how it’s related to the trash we see on the beach. It is my hope that through Ocean Junkies and other wonderful activist websites, we can raise awareness about plastic pollution and increase sustainable living by re-using what we have already created and creating from biodegradable and compostable materials.
